boat is trying to cross an ocean using only solar power

The sun is a powerful source of energy. So powerful, in fact, that Damon McMillan is betting his boat can cross more than 2,000 miles of ocean using only its rays. McMillan is the captain of Seacharger, which is on a mission to become the first unmanned, autonomous boat to cross an ocean using only solar power. It’s a project that McMillan and three of his friends have worked on for two and a half years, after being inspired by a robotic sailboat competition.  Constructing the boat took a lot of trial and error, McMillan says, and at times it seemed an impossible task. “If I had started believing that I had to get to the end tomorrow, I never would have continued. So it’s always just one step at a time,” he said. Judging by the intricate design, it’s no wonder the craft took over two years to build. It's powered by two ultra-thin, 100-watt solar panels and a brushless motor. Batteries store any surplus power, so Seacharger can travel for up to three days without ne

'I wouldn't go into Central London through June or July. ENGLAND - BOOM': British ISIS recruiter known as Mrs Terror issues chilling threat of summer terror campaign

One of ISIS's most renowned British jihadi brides has issued a chilling threat against civilians in the UK, warning of terror attacks in London. 'To be honest I wouldn't go into Central London through June... or even July well to be honest I wouldn't go there at all especially by Tube,' Sally Jones - known as Mrs Terror - wrote on social media.  The former benefits scrounger, who abandoned her disastrous career as a punk rocker to convert to Islam, revealed she is now hiding in the ISIS-held city of Mosul in Iraq. She also posted a new photograph of herself dressed in a black burqa, posing next to the sea, supposedly in Iraq.  'A picnic and a paddle in the Tigress (sic) - just beautiful,' she wrote. Food shortages take toll on Venezuelans' diet

Not so long ago, whenever Juan González would go to the butcher he’d buy a few nice steaks for himself and cow lung, known here as  bofe , to chop up and feed his dog. “Now  bofe  is what I eat, when I can get it,” said the 55-year-old elevator repairman on a street in the Venezuelan capital. With  prolonged shortages of basic foods , Venezuelans have been forced to shift their diets to whatever they can find. And what they can find is not necessarily healthy. Milk, meat and beans – the main sources of protein in the Venezuelan diet – are hard to find or sold at exorbitant prices, and many are filling up on empty carbs from pasta, rice and the traditional  arepa  cornmeal cake. “These fill you up and make you fat but they are not nutritious,” said nutritionist Héctor Cruces. “Viscera are high in fat and low on protein.” A study revealed last month by Venezuela’s top three universities showed that 12% of those polled said they were eating less than three meals a day. “A

Fur flies as Chechen leader and comedian John Oliver clash over lost cat

Oliver mocked Kadyrov in a  five-minute segment  on HBO’s Last Week Tonight after the Chechen leader appealed to the world to help find his cat, a so-called toyger, a domestic cat bred to resemble a tiger cub. Last week, Kadyrov posted a message on  Instagram  to ask for help in locating the animal. “We have begun to seriously worry,” he wrote, asking for anyone with information on the cat’s whereabouts to get in touch. Bill Cosby to stand trial on sexual assault charges in Pennsylvania

Bill Cosby, the TV star and the subject of dozens of accusations from women who say he sexually assaulted them, must face trial over an accusation that he intoxicated and sexually assaulted a Temple University employee more than 12 years ago in his  Pennsylvania  home. The ruling in Pennsylvania district court sets in motion one of the biggest trials of the decade, in which the actor and comedian faces up to 10 years in prison. The case involves the only criminal proceedings against Cosby, 78, to emerge from a tidal wave of similar accusations. Andrea Constand, who met Cosby when she was an employee of Temple University in Philadelphia and considered him a mentor, claims that Cosby drugged and violated her at his Pennsylvania home in January 2004. Constand was not present for Tuesday’s hearing. On Tuesday, two detectives who interviewed Constand in 2005 read detailed portions of her written statement to police. Google offices raided in Paris as prosecutors announce fraud probe

French investigators have raided Google’s Paris headquarters, saying the company is now under investigation for aggravated financial fraud and organised money laundering. In a major escalation of France’s long-running enquiry into Google’s tax affairs, magistrates revealed on Tuesday that the software giant is suspected of evading taxes by failing to declare the full extent of its activities in the country.  Prosecutors said they want to establish whether the Irish company through which Google funnels the majority of its European revenues does in fact control a “permanent establishment” in  France . Google  maintains that its large offices in Paris, London and other European capitals are not fully fledged businesses, but operate as mere satellites of its international headquarters in Dublin, providing back-office services such as marketing. The company routes most of its non-US revenue from activities such as advertising through Dublin, where the 12.5% corporation tax rate
